DFID - Education Strategy 2010-2015 Published

The UK Department for International Development launched its new education strategy 'Learning for All' on Friday.

The overall strategic focus of the policy is 'quality basic education for all'. DFID will focus on the following three priorites to achieve this:

  • Access to basic education cycle of primary and lower secondary, particularly in fragile and conflict affected states
  • Quality of teaching and learning, particularly for basic literacy and numeracy
  • Skills, to link young people to opportunities, jobs and growth.

As part of the policy, DFID aims to develop stronger partnership with the UK public through expanded support to UK schools and civil society, and through research partnerships with UK higher education.

The policy also highlights the effect of climate change on education and the effect of conflict and insecurity on education.

DFID has committed to spending £1 billion in 2010/11, and the same amount every year until 2015/16. In 2010/11 around 57% of this £1 billion will be spent through DFID country programmes, 37% through contributions to multilateral agencies and the Education for All Fast Track Initiative, and the remaining 6% through other funding channels including UK NGOs.
