Next Steps on Climate Change for the Network
Discussions at the NIDOS Climate Change event resulted in a number of recommendations for next steps within the network, including the establishment of a working group.
A number of NIDOS members requested NIDOS to coordinate an event on the topic of climate change as this was an issue which they were beginning to want to work on more effectively and stimulate thinking about within the network.
As a result, NIDOS coordinated a Climate Change networking event for members on 16 October 2008, in partnership with five NIDOS members (British Red Cross, Christian Aid, IIED, Mercy Corps and SEAD) as well as with WWF Scotland. We also invited Sean Doolan, DFID Climate Change Advisor, to speak.
This successful event brought together 25 NIDOS member organisations, heard some stimulating speakers and held four themed workshops. See here for full details of the event, the presentations made and outcomes from workshops.
What is the network doing as the next steps? The discussion at the event resulted in the following recommendations for next steps within the NIDOS network:
- Writing a report on the event and producing a paper on the issues which had emerged from the day to promote the importance of climate change to member organisations - this has been done: see report link above
- Engaging members through a mapping survey asking them about their organisations' current responses to climate change issues and what their priorities might be for the future
- Providing training on climate change language and issues
- Building links with BOND's Development and Environment Group
- Setting up a Climate Change Working Group to take this work forward within the Network
The climate change networking event also looked at Carbon Footprinting with a presentation from Ecometrica. NIDOS followed this up by getting our own Carbon Footprint Report.
Mapping Survey
As a recommended starting point for the next steps, NIDOS has conducted a mapping survey of NIDOS members' work in relation to climate change - this was completed in May 2009. The survey achieved a good response rate (40% of NIDOS members). A number of respondents said they would be keen to come together to collaborate and steer work on climate change - the first steps to achieving objective five, the setting up of a NIDOS Climate Change Working group. A summary report of the survey results is available here
Climate Change Working Group
Several NIDOS member organisations have expressed an interest in joining a working group and this is currently being set up. Details will be updated here once this is set up.
