Mary's Meals / SIR

Description

Mary's Meals / SIR is involved in issues relating to children's welfare, emergency aid, development and management of overseas projects. Through their partner organisations, they run children's homes for HIV positive abandoned children; school feeding programmes for children in poverty; emergency feeding programmes; advocacy work for the poor and marginalised; support for AIDs orphans, primary health care clinics; and distribution of material aid to long term refugees. The main activity of the organization is Mary’s Meals.

Mary’s Meals is a movement to set up school feeding projects in communities where hunger is a barrier to children gaining an education. In 2002 the Mary’s Meals movement began by providing 200 orphans in Malawi with a daily meal. The idea of this movement is to provide every child in need with a daily meal in their school. In this way the world’s poorest children are enabled to gain the education that can lead them out of poverty. The Mary’s Meals mission is to enable people to offer their money, goods, skills, time, or prayer, to provide effective help to those suffering the effects of extreme poverty in the world’s poorest communities.

Mary’s Meals is currently feeding over 350,000 children daily. The main project is in Malawi where it first began, but meals are also provided in; India, Philippines, Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Albania, Ukraine, Bosnia, Romania, Uganda, Liberia, Kenya, Sudan, Zambia, Haiti and Bolivia.
