IIED

Description
IIED ( International Institute for Environment & Development) is an independent, non-profit organization promoting sustainable patterns of world development through collaborative research, policy studies, networking and knowledge dissemination.
Our mission is to provide expertise and leadership in researching and achieving sustainable development at local national, regional and global levels. In alliance with others we seek to help shape a future that ends global poverty and delivers and sustains efficient and equitable management of the world's natural resources.
Our key strength is a worldwide network of patterns with whom we seek to transform decision-making through research, communication, stakeholder engagement, capacity development, and implementation services. This enables IIED to have influence beyond pure research.
IIED conducts action-orientated research in multi-faceted way through programmes whose titles suggest the main areas of focus: Biodiversity and Livelihoods; Climate Change; Corporate Responsibility for Environment and Development; Human Settlements; Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Livelihoods; and Tourism and Sustainable Development - each linked through cross cutting themes such as governance, public-private partnerships and sustainable markets.
In Scotland, IIED is represented by three programmes which draw on and contribute to considerable Scottish expertise in the areas of:
- Drylands (focusing on land rights and tenure, managing the commons, supporting pastoral civil society, and making decentralisation work, primarily in Africa)
- Forestry and Land Use (focusing on making forest governance work for marginalized groups, responsible forest enterprise, and investing in forest environmental services, institutions and livelihoods)
- Environmental Economics (focusing on discipline base research in environmental economics particularly linked to new markets for environmental services)
The staff of IIED's Scotland office work in: Benin, Brazil, Burkina Faso, China, Costa Rica, Cote d'Ivoire, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Panama, Peru, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia, Uganda.
In Scotland we wish to establish in-depth and long-standing partnerships of mutual respect and equality through which we can jointly source funds to address the programmatic issues listed above.
